Hello! An dream come true, I am flying to Greenland for a few days. I am starting my journey in Copenhagen, flying with the Air Greenland A330-200 (Registration number: OY-GRN ) to Kangerlussuaq. Flight time about 4 hours and 20 minutes. Kangerlussuaq is the biggest Airport in Greenland and the only Airport with connection to Europe (There are a few flights from/to Iceland – but nevermind). From Kangerlussuaq Air Greenland is flying to Aasiaat, Ilulissat, Kulusuk, Maniitsoq, Nuuk and Sisimiut. Kangerlussuaq is also an alternate airport for many International flights from Europe to America (in case of an emergency) and is located on the west coast of Greenland.
East Greenland seen from the airplane. The Ice on Greenland is up to 3km (!) thick and if they whole Ice on Greenland would melt, the sea level would rise about 7m (!).
Kangerlussuaq is like an aircraft carrier approach, 😀 It`s only possible to land from the sea side.
After the arrival my connection flight to Ilulissat was cancelled due to heavy snow in Ilulissat. I had to wait for about 4 hours and then i finally arrived in the hotel a few hours later. There was already dark, so no photos from this flight. 🙂 Next day i went with an tourguide to the Ilulissat Ice fjord. The Icebergs can be up to 150m high (London eye 135m) and only 10-15% is visible. So you only can imagine how big they are under the water. Sometimes, especially in summer, they rotate due an other center of gravitiy because they melt and parts of the Ice berg break off. So that you have an Idea how big and how dangerous (Tsunami waves) this really is, please watch this Video on YouTube: Video .
Because its winter there arent many Icebergs.
Walking around the City.
Parking with an view 😛
The Hospital with 23 beds. There are about 10 doctors – one of them is Greenlander – the others are from Denmark and are working abroad.
Daily business in Ilulissat.
And there are Huskies everywhere and yes they are outside all the time, even when its -30°C.
But they know how to keep thereself warm.
The young Huskies are runing around free.
Ilulissat has nearly 5000 inhabitants and about 2000 Huskies.
On Sunday 2. December the lights on the christmas tree were switched on – an highlight for the whole village. 😀
And i had to try if my drohne works at -15°C.
And i still have my drohne. 😛
Road to the airport.
Walk way to..
.. the coolest Hotel room in the world but only open during summer.. 🙂
Just some Icebergs.
The Icebergs break off from the Jakobshavn Glacier, located about 70km away from the city. Everyday 86 Mio (!) tons of ice break off this glacier. The Icebergs need about 3-12 Months from the glacier to the open water. Its most likely that the Titanic crashed into one of these Icebergs.
Size comparison with the small fisher boats.
And some birds..
The days are really, really short (No sun at this time of the year. Its only “daylight” ). So i was already on the way home.. Kangerlussuaq again.
The “Greenland express” arriving from Copenhagen.
The legendary sign at the airport. You know you are far away from home when the North Pole is closer then Frankfurt. 😛
Thank you for your time and i hope you enjoyed my photos from Greenland. 😀 Cheers! Michael
